Supervision has been an activity in social work almost as long as social work has existed. Supervision can be claimed to have been a forerunner to the first comprehensive social work education. Today, all over the world supervision of professional social workers exist in at least three different ideal types; administrative supervision, educational supervision and supportive supervision. The aim of this paper is to analyze and discuss if supervision could be regarded a possible bridging activity between experience and evidence in social work. The following research questions will be treated: (1) What topics are being discussed in supervisions sessions? (2) How is supervision valued by social workers and managers in social work? (3) What position has different forms of knowledge in the supervision? The paper builds on a study of supervision in 13 municipalities in Sweden 2006. The data stems from a survey to 198 social workers with experience from supportive supervision; interviews from 54 managers whose groups had supervision and six focus groups with 24 social workers, managers and supervisors. The results show that supervision in Sweden focuses primarily on the relation between the social worker and the client. Also topics related to the organizational setting and the mangers style of leadership is frequently discussed. Much more seldom are research articles, representing other forms of formal knowledge, being discussed. Supervision is valued very high from both social workers and managers in social work. So far supervision is primarily an arena where professional experience is shared. Different reasons for this are discussed in the paper.
