Sammanfattning (abstract):
[Book, out of print:] This volume represents a major milestone in human ecology. As the cover of this book illustrates, human ecology is about the complex interrelations between humans and the environment. Its ideas are finding meaningful application within numerous settings and institutions throughout the world. The diverse approaches presented in this book are comerstones in the foundation of future thinking. The authors, in their own ways, have fashioned new and needed syntheses within their respective human-environmental contexts. Taken together, the resulting approaches reveal and validate the outlines of human ecology's broad mandate. The sixteen papers collected in this book are the result of a human ecology symposium organised during the Firenze INTECOL meeting in July 1998. The purposes of the symposium were manifold:

* to bring together established and new practitioners of human ecology to exchange perspectives, to share approaches, and to interact and strengthen professional links between individuals and among institutions

* to provide a special opportunity to continue collaboration among many of the leading regional human ecology societies

* to create avenue to prepare a special publication based on the symposium for use within the overall International Association of Ecology (INTECOL) Congress, as well as for educators, researchers and practitioners unable to take part in the event itself and finally, to reinforce a growing commitment within INTECOL to advance the understanding and ideas of human ecology, which began with the 1990 INTECOL Congress in Yokohama, Japan.

In this way the book reflects the state of the art of research in human ecology in 1998.
