Sammanfattning (abstract):
This paper presents a snap shot of a German exchange student’s experience of culture and change at a Swedish University. Based on narrative research the data is drawn from the student’s email correspondence and from a focus group interviews with a number of international students. Findings suggest that the initial challenges faced by the international student studying in Sweden included an initial sense of isolation as the student was trying to fit in to the Swedish University culture, and learning about negotiating the university requirements. The positive findings included a sense of belonging, understanding different cultures, time to reflect on the differences and similarities between the German and Swedish higher education systems and the effect of the cultural change to the student’s sense of self.
