Sammanfattning (abstract):
In terms of gender it goes without saying that female artists’ work sells at lower prices than those of a similar level of training and experience by men. The history of pathological misogyny in the artworld on the part of curators, museum directors, gallerists, collectors and, importantly, artists themselves has been well-documented. Working through this dishonourable list of inequality, I want to concentrate in this talk on some contradictions that emerge when demands for market equality for women’s work meets the inequities embedded in the desire for value itself. Whilst this argument (if you cant beat them join them) is as old as feminism itself (and I remember clearly the battles for Wages for Housework fought by my mother’s generation and the fraught lines between Marxist and anarchist feminism in the late 1970s and early 80s), it is rarely distilled through the procedures of the artworld.
