Sammanfattning (abstract):
Nicknames are often unwritten and unsystematically derived and attributed, yet they might offer insight into how a sense of community is created and sustained, especially during dramatic changes like migration and resettlement. Drawing upon ethnographic study (2011-2013) with Turkish migrants who settled in Sweden in the 1960s and early 1970s and focusing on a selection and narrative analysis of nicknames, this paper will consider how particular nicknames initiated first diasporic ties and a sense of community in Sweden. Nicknames were common among first-generation migrants, primarily among men. These nicknames (1) reflect Turkish migrants’ first impressions of the Swedish society, (2) illustrate the first encounters with the Swedish institutions, (3) remind of some pre-migratory backgrounds and cultural frameworks, and (4) highlight community-building processes in a migration context. I will argue that the currency of nicknames and narration of their stories, especially among older people, is emblematic of the responses of migrants who sought to come to grips with the challenges of ‘homing’ in a new country. By illustrating these roles of nicknaming in ‘diaspora space’, this paper will analyze the environments where nicknames are concocted and circulated via narratives. Oral histories of individual migrants are significant to record the history of a migrant community, yet it is also of relevance to hark back to collective experiences that are shaped in diaspora space and captured in forms other than testimonies.
