Sammanfattning (abstract):
How much digitization and other motivating factors are needed for a place in a low-‐income context to give birth to local digital producers and foster them into international actors in the Internet economy? This qualitative paper takes an internationalization perspective of digital entrepreneurship and is based on a field study of Morocco. Morocco has the highest internet penetration in Africa (56%) and is one of the countries in Africa with most international exchange and advanced trade agreements with the EU and USA. With an export legacy of primarily agriculture, minerals and textiles, Morocco is also a country with a substantial social-‐ and wealth inequality combines with a mosaic of cultures, ethnics and languages. One of the challenges for countries like Morocco is to move up the global value chain. Will the online service sector bridge this upwards transition? How do countries like Morocco blend into the Internet geography, which up till now is dominated by the Global North? What drives their digital entrepreneurs and what are their international ambitions? The paper attempts to answer these questions and portray a country and its digital entrepreneurs in the midst of digital and global shift.
