The quest for efficient business models for secure and (smart) truck parkings in Europe

The purpose of the study is to identify the key elements for a successful establishment and operation of secure (and smart) truck parking areas resulting in a proposed business model. Semi-structured interviews with representatives from four truck parking areas were conducted. The interview guide contained questions based on the Canvas business model, e.g. the value proposition, revenue streams, key resources, cost structure. An interview with an experienced person in transport crime was also included.The results of the interviews show what factors are the enablers and what are the barriers. A business model for secure and smart parking is presented. The four cases studied show that there is a business case for these investments. Only four case studies are included, three are from Sweden and one from the UK, which calls for more international studies in the area. The focus is on practical experiences of secure truck parkings of operators. This knowledge is valuable when developing more secure parking sites by actors such as national road agencies and future private operators (of secure parkings, ITS partners etc.). The European Commission put pressure on member states (i.e. the national transport agencies) in the EU to implement secure truck parkings. In Sweden, and in other countries, a challenge has been to find efficient business models including both private and public actors and ITS aspects. The proposed model can help in this. An increased establishment of secure truck parking areas facilitate safety for drivers and reduced accidents on one hand and higher security for goods with fewer thefts. Also, this would enable better transport planning and less transport kilometres as drivers do not have to search for parking, which mean less Co2 emitted around transport hubs e.g. cities etc. The experiences of the four cases studied can help both public and private actors in their quest for efficient business models for smart and secure truck parking. The proposed business model can be a tool to use. The marketing context and the economy are integrated. Also, data on costs and revenues are included in one case, which is rarely displayed.
