Sammanfattning (abstract):
Generally, formative assessment is preferred for young language learners (McKay, 2006), while summative assessment is introduced at a later stage. In Sweden, formal instruction of English begins in first grade but it is not until the end of primary school (grade 6) that learners are graded for the first time. This paper presents a validation and evaluation of the Young Learner Vocabulary Assessment Test, YLVAT, which attempts to assess young learners’ English L2 vocabulary proficiency. The YLVAT consists of three parts, first 13 “recognition” items, second 12 word combination items, and third 12 productive items. In the validation and evaluation test, pupils (age 12, grade level 5, N=52) were tested during regular school hours, and in addition to the test itself, there were asked to fill out an evaluation of the test. Results indicate a good spread of results (max: 37, mean: 18.9, highest score: 34, lowest score: 7, SD: 6.5), which means that it indeed serves the intended function of discriminating between learners. The results of the evaluation suggest that the pupils feel that this is a fair and relevant test. Furthermore, there is a clear correlation between actual results and how difficult the students evaluated the test to be; pupils who found the test to be difficult scored significantly lower than those who found the test to be easy. We argue that the YLVAT is a reliable and valid tool to assess young learners’ vocabulary proficiency and in spite of its summative characteristics, it can be of formative use in the classroom facilitating for teachers to come to grips with the variation in levels of competence among their pupils. In so doing, subsequent measures can be taken to compensate for lacking knowledge among some, and to enhance further learning among others already at a relatively early age.
