GIS-based analysis of geohazards and potential georesources using 3-D models of geological structures

Sammanfattning (abstract):
In two case studies it is demonstrated how Geographic Information Systems (GIS) can be applied to locate and assess geological risks as well as geological resources. The reference system for the 3-dimensional analysis of the geological data is introduced. It consists of a Digital Terrain Model (DTM) and a (simplified) Digital Structure Model (DSM) of the subsurface. The first example shows how the reference system has been used to determine areas of high landslide risk. In the second example the suitability for different geothermal applications down to a depth of 200 m was investigated. Both study areas are in the Wurzburg region of northern Bavaria. The 3-dimensional approach allows for a wide range of applications in the geological and environmental sciences.
