Sammanfattning (abstract):
Panelists from the Middle East, Europe, and North America explore ways that women’s status and work in news reporting are affected by major shifts in the world and their nations. These include political shifts (e.g., civil strife, changes in governments), economic shifts (e.g., media conglomeration), technological shifts (e.g., emergence of digital and social media), and cultural shifts (e.g., resurgence of political Islam/fundamentalism), among others. Presentations will draw from research and real-life examples to spark discussion. Contribution by Edstrom: “Technology’s mixed blessing for women journalists in Nordic nations” Gender equality has been a hallmark for Sweden and other Nordic countries for decades, and Sweden is used to being among the top five in the Gender Gap Index conducted by the World Economic Forum. There is political consensus in Sweden on the importance of gender equality and that has also affected women’s status in the media industry in general and newsrooms in particular. In terms of numbers, there is parity in some occupational roles in news organizations. During the last 10 years, there has also been an increase in the number of women in high editorial positions, such as executive editors and CEOs, for large newspapers and public service broadcasting companies. But these advances in women’s status are not reflected in news content, which is still male dominated. The technological shift has also opened for more open misogynist voices towards feminist media and journalists through social media.
