Sammanfattning (abstract):
In this paper I will investigate the role of think tanks in Poland after 1989. More precisely, on the one hand, I will analyze how a number of Polish think tanks define their ambitions and attitudes towards the state and the broader civil society and, on the other, what opportunity structures define their repertoire of action. This mezzo level of civil society is not yet well explored in Poland, at the same time as think tanks’ role in discourse production is rather significant. The infamous thesis of the weak civil society in Eastern Europe will be challenged to some extent. It will also be argued that the shape and position of the organized civil society in Poland at least partially can still be explained by legacies of the communist past, reinforced by the neoliberal orientation chosen by the political elite after 1989.
