Sammanfattning (abstract):
Etruskische Spiegel is a grand work of three scholars from the German Institute in Rome, Eduard Gerhard, Alfred Klügmann and Gustav Körte. It was published in various volumes from 1840 down to the last issue 1897. Already the first volumes expose a growing awareness of the importance of engraved mirrors as guides towards an increased comprehension of Etruscan culture and language. The fifth volume, however, gives a more over-all, detailed information on each individual mirror. The organisation of the presentation of the various mirrors in this last volume is still reflected on the staging of the catalogues in the modern, international publication of Corpus Speculorum Etruscorum. The present paper aims at an analysis of changes in scientific performance in the volumes published between 1840 and 1897 and discusses ideas in them as reflected in contemporary discussions.
