Sammanfattning (abstract):
A newcomer or occasional visitor at any skatepark will probably find themselves in quandary with regard to the local organization of the scene: A jumble of people on boards are moving about in high speed in a concrete terrain. Even so, what might seem chaotic at the outset is rather to be understood as an organization simply unknown. To work towards the resolution of this lack in understanding the current analysis adopts an ethnomethodological approach when investigating the social activity of skating in pools. The aim is to first sketch a brief background to the phenomenon of pool-skating. This lays the foundation for a detailed description of the locally produced phenomenon of order at the pool-skate session. Data comprises of video-records of people taking turns at riding in the confined space of a skateboard pool. What becomes witnessable is a party administered framework of order, that is neither accomplished through turns-at-talk nor based on formatted queues. The analysis shows that the studied activity exhibits a recurrent sequential structure. The simultaneous onset of two runs in the pool is a potentially physically hazardous occurrence and specific turn allocation techniques tailored to minimize such incidents can be observed. This account will subsequently be related to previous descriptions of ordering work that can be found in the literature. Through this comparison the discussion seeks to revisit turn-organized activities as these are conceived broadly as well as the much studied turn-taking system for conversation.
