Sammanfattning (abstract):
The current paper focuses on the varying traditions concerning language use in foreign language testing and assessment. Whereas in some contexts a monolingual approach, i.e. the use of the target language only, is regarded as self-evident, tests in other contexts follow a bilingual tradition, using the official language of the country as a means of informing, instructing, and asking questions. In the latter case, students are sometimes also asked to give their responses in the national language. In our presentation we will report on a study of French reading comprehension conducted in two countries with distinctly different traditions, one being basically monolingual in its approach, the other bilingual. Five texts with a total of 19 items representing three different item types made up the test, which was delivered in one monolingual and one bilingual version. Both versions were administered in the two countries, to a total number of 962 students. In addition, questionnaires were used to elicit students’ and teachers’ reactions to the different tests. Data were analysed using the One Parameter Logistic Model (OPLM) in order to determine whether items functioned differently in the two formats and countries. Results from these analyses are presented and combined with opinions expressed by students and teachers to discuss the use of language(s) from psychometric as well as from psychological and pedagogical angles, and in particular in relation to the concept of validity.
