Sammanfattning (abstract):
This presentation explores how game-based remix culture can help young people question, critique and critically frame ideologically charged narratives. An analysis of an episode from ‘Red vs. Blue’ (Rooster Teeth Productions, 2004), informed by Freire’s (1985) critical praxis theory, reveals how machinima remix culture can empower young adults to engage in non-alienated (Young, 2005) forms of creative expression. The digital art form produced is characterised by parody, self-mockery and provides a satirical commentary on the players immersion in techno-popular game culture. In this respect, machinima is identified as a distinctive form of subcultural practices at odds with establishment values of late capitalism. Nevertheless, the paper illustrates how machinima production activities might be incorporated into a games-based pedagogy in order to afford learners new opportunities for perspectives taking (Tomasello,1999). Drawing on the findings of a design experiment that explored the pedagogical possibilities of virtual role-play (Squires and Jenkins, 2003; Francis, 2006, 2011), the presentation demonstrates how educators might harness freely available tools to encourage participants to re-tell their personal experience of playing a character in an interactive cyber-drama (Murray, 1997). Further, it demonstrates how engagement with this emergent art form can help students critique, question and critically frame dominant narratives and become more self-conscious of the relationships between power, oppression and representation in contemporary society.
