Sammanfattning (abstract):
This paper attempts to give a snapshot overview of the field of IR Theory based on a series of thirty interviews with influential IR theorists conducted for Theory Talks. In doing so, this paper provides a unique survey of what those at the forefront of theoretical innovation perceive to be the central debates in IR Theory and core challenges confronting IR as a practice. It first presents two related challenges that are perceived to be central in IR theory because of their recurrence throughout these interviews: the relation between state and market and the challenge of moving from multilateralism to global governance. It then addresses a central debate in IR theory, or rather, the perceived lack thereof: a consensus seems to exist that the field is in some kind of a deadlock. Based on the findings of this body of interviews, I propose that IR Theory is essentially a reflexive field conditioned not only by the ever-shifting practice of international politics but also and perhaps more by ongoing contestation over framing of that practice by authorities in the field. By trying to present IR theory as a Bourdieuan field with a ‘stake at stake’, this paper shows that the deadlock emanates from the vested interests of the most influential scholars and shows the way forward to lie in a new generation that doesn’t shun interdisciplinary debate.
