Sammanfattning (abstract):
In the 1880s, the so called direct method became widely spread in French language teaching in non-francophone provinces in the hexagone as well as in the colonies. In historical research of didactic ideas, the risk to obscure the political and social specificity of the colonial situation, has been taken as a reason for avoiding comparison with metropolitan France. In this article, it is argued that a comparative perspective on the direct method in the province and the colony is fruitful. The reason for this is twofold. First, when turning to the sources it is clear that the comparison was done at the time by the historical agents themselves. In the discipline of history of ideas, taking the sources at face value in this regard is a legitimate approach. Second and paradoxically, the incomparability of a certain historical phenomenon can only be established through comparison. The potential results generated by such a comparison would fit well with the conclusions of recent historical syntheses of the French colonial era.
